Dear

I hope you are continuing to enjoy this free member information service
from South Lanarkshire Leisure. Based on your personal interest of feeling
healthier
activities, I have put together some information you may find interesting
and useful.

HERE’S A THOUGHT.
You wake up on a typically cold and frosty Glasgow morning. To get to work, you go to your car. You let your car run for a few minutes before driving off.
WHY DO YOU DO THIS?
You do this in order to ‘warm up’ the engine and each of the individual mechanical parts of your car. This helps the car to run smoothly, and stops it from ‘Breaking Down.’

The exact same principal should apply to how you treat your body prior to exercise.

It is very important to warm up your engine! Without warming up prior to engaging in physical activity, you put a lot of strain on all the muscle groups of the body, especially the most important muscle in the body – the heart!

THE ACT OF WARMING UP

Many people who work out in the
gym do not bother with warming
up. By not warming up properly
They are putting their bodies at
risk of an undue muscular injury.

Warming up prepares your body for the stress of activity. It speeds up the rate at which the muscles relax and contract, and initiates the motor units within the muscles. It also raises the body temperature, speeding up the heart rate and blood flow thus improving the oxygen flow to the muscles.

It can consist of stretching, starting at a lower intensity on any piece of cardio kit, or general exercises such as sit ups or press ups. It is also important to have a functional element to your warm up. This means that your warm up should ‘mimic’ the actions that your body will go through during the main part of your regime.

It also stimulates the production of blood sugar and adrenaline readying the body for action. The act of ‘Warming Up’ is particularly important to people who have cardiovascular conditions, as this reduces the workload on the heart and provides it with an adequate blood supply. It doesn’t have to take long, and can be done within the first ten minutes of exercise.

So, next time you do any activity WARM UP! It helps to prepare our bodies, and also puts our minds into exercise mode. It also helps to prevent muscle soreness, muscle strains and the tearing of muscle fibres or tendons. Good Luck on your next Warm Up session!

Please feel free to ask a member of the Fitness Staff about the
above information on your next visit to one of our Centres.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
